Absolutely! This is what this trip is all about! We aim to give you all an experience that you would not receive as an ‘everyday tourist’. We are fortunate to have experienced wildlife guides joining us on the Experience to provide us with detailed knowledge on the environment and wildlife that we are witnessing. 

You don't need any prior experience to join this trip. However, you do need to have a fair level of fitness to be able to walk for extended periods through hot and humid rainforest.

International & domestic flights/travel to and from Iquitos, Peru are not included. Travel insurance is also not provided but required.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all provided and will include tea, coffee and juices. However soft drinks, alcohol and extra snacks and local purchases in between will not be provided.

This trip takes place at the beginning of the ‘high-water’ or ‘wet’ season in the upper Amazon basin near Iquitos. The climate is warm and humid with chances for rain every day (usually the afternoon). You will be out throughout the day looking for wildlife, from early morning to after dark (depending on the itinerary). The important priorities are staying cool and dry and being protected from the sun. You will also sometimes traverse uneven terrain. To ensure you have your bases covered, we recommend:

• Long-sleeve t-shirts and shirts (quick-dry material)
• Short sleeve t-shirts and shirts (quick-dry material)
• A waterproof jacket - this should not be something that takes on any moisture as it will remain damp. We recommend a large, cheap ‘disposable’ plastic poncho which will completely protect you from rain and take up next to no room in your pack
• Lightweight trousers (quick-dry material)
• Shorts or zip off-trousers for warmer days
• A cap or broad rimmed hat to protect from the sun
• Stable, closed-toe walking shoes or boots
• Alternate shoes for down time (trainers or sandals) - allowing boots to dry
• Towel (quick-dry travel towel)

Weather is of course unpredictable, but not much will stop us on this trip, only extreme electrical storms.

This is because the weather is fairly consistent throughout the year, it is always warm and humid, the main things that vary are the amount of rain and level of the water. So we will prepare to go out even when it rains. After all, this is a rainforest, so we can expect there to be rain every day, usually in the afternoon for a couple of hours.

There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad preparation.

we have chosen to run this trip in the winter season in South Africa where the days are sunny and bright, rainfall is low, and nights are chilly. If it rains, that won't impact us much, we'll still be able to do what we have planned, we just need dress accordingly.

This depends on what you consider ‘lots of bugs’. Firstly, this is the Amazon Rainforest, the most biodiverse environment on the planet, so there are so many species here that there is a lot of everything. However, it is often not what people expect. There are some bugs, yes, but it is not swarming with them. Let’s take the most irritating bug of all, mosquitos. Mosquito numbers are at their worst here during the height of the dry season (September/October) and best during the height of the wet season (April/May). In December, the numbers are not so bad, but we should take basic measures to avoid their bites, such as covering up and wearing insect repellent on exposed areas. Other bugs are less problematic and less numerous.

When we are in the Amazon, and away from the lodges, there are no toilets. However, should you need to go, we will find somewhere adequate for you if you are in need. We will usually come back to the lodge for meal times and we will let you know if we are likely to be out for longer stretches.

Yes, unfortunately we cannot accept guests under the age of 17 years old and 17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Over 18s can accompany themselves.

We recommend fully immersing yourself in this 10-day trip and largely disconnecting from the online world. However, should you need connectivity, here is an overview of the connection across the Experience:

• There will be WiFi in our accommodations
• Signal in the Amazon is poor and disappears in places.

As this is a remote wilderness, sometimes WiFi goes down and you may not have any signal for extended periods. You'll have company though (if you want it!) so don't worry.

Couples will be together in private rooms and singles will be paired up appropriately to share twin rooms. In some cases, there is opportunity to pay for an upgrade to your own room. Otherwise, we are more than happy to discuss allocation with you individually if you have a specific preference.

Upon booking, you must arrange international and domestic flights to arrive in Iquitos on the day that the trip begins. We will provide you with a time that you must arrive by.

We will meet you at an agreed location in Iquitos that evening before we get a good night's rest before heading off into the Amazon early the next morning. On the final day, we will head back to Iquitos city where the trip will end.
