The Kruger
A biodiversity hotspot
Nestled in the northeastern corner of South Africa, bordered by Mozambique to the East, the Kruger has the ideal conditions for Africa’s megafauna to thrive. The area is huge, comprised of: the world famous Kruger National Park (an enormous 19,623 km2 protected area), the Greater Kruger (a privately owned protected area to the west), and many surrounding reserves.
unprecedented access
Getting closer to wildlife
Our Kruger Experience gives you the opportunity to get closer to Africa’s unique wildlife than anywhere else. Track packs of wild dogs through the bush in Kruger National Park to try to get up close to these endangered predators and gain insight into their behaviour and the research being done to protect them. Meet and care for rhinos orphaned by the illegal poaching trade in Kruger National Park at Care For Wild rhino sanctuary. And go on foot in the bush of the Greater Kruger to track and observe animal behaviours with expert guides and trackers at EcoTraining.
the home of africa's
MEGAFAUNA
The home of more species of large mammal than any other African game reserve, the Kruger is a megafauna hotspot. The area is home to 147 species of mammal, including the rare and endangered African wild dog, pangolin, and black rhino. Beyond mammals and the Big Five, the Kruger is packed with wildlife of all kinds, hosting 114 species of reptile and 507 species of birds from eagles to storks, owls to ostrich.
Comfort in the bush
Our Kruger Experience is an adventure that will take you to incredible locations throughout the Kruger ecosystem and offer you truly magical stays. Whether its around a campfire in cosy tents in the Kruger National Park, eating breakfast with elephants by the stunning watering hole at Pridelands camp in the Greater Kruger or in cabins on site at Care For Wild’s rhino sanctuary. Each destination will bring comfort and immersion in the heart of South Africa’s wilderness; allowing you to find peace and rest between days of exploration and discovery.
LOVE, LEARN & PROTECT
CONSERVATION & SCIENCE
Our Kruger Experience promises to strengthen your love and respect for the wildlife you interact with and the ecosystem that supports it; but also, the selfless stewards who protect it all. You’ll have the rare opportunity to learn from conservationists and researchers first hand in the fight to safeguard the Kruger’s spectacular animals. From getting hands-on in caring for orphaned rhinos, to joining researchers in the Kruger National Park tracking and observe the health and behaviours of African Wild Dogs. Our Experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for true wildlife lovers to gain access and exposure that you can't find on a standard African Safari.
As part of your Experience you will actively contribute to conservation projects in the area, with a donation per guest going to an exciting project that you will learn about and witness first hand while visiting. Together, we will support the protection and longevity of the Kruger ecosystem and all that live within it.

Kruger Experience: FAQs
Absolutely! This is what this trip is all about! We aim to give you all an experience that you would not receive as an ‘everyday tourist’. We are so fortunate to have researchers and scientists joining us on the Experience to provide us with detailed knowledge on the environment and wildlife that we are witnessing.
You don't need any prior experience to join this trip. However, you do need to have a fair level of fitness to attend bush walks and care activities for the rhinos at Care For Wild.
Good question, not much!
International flights/travel to and from South Africa (most likely to Johannesburg Airport) are not included. Nor are domestic flights to Nelspruit (where we begin and end our Experience). Travel insurance is also not provided but strongly recommended.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all provided and will include tea, coffee and juices. However soft drinks, alcohol and extra snacks and local purchases in between will not be provided.
This trip will involve time out early in the morning and out in the sun during the day looking for wildlife and traversing sometimes uneven terrain. To ensure you have your bases covered, we recommend:
*Note that all clothing should be neutral coloured, bright colours should not be worn.
- Long-sleeve t-shirts and shirts
- Short sleeve t-shirts and shirts
- A fleece
- A rain and wind resistant jacket
- Lightweight trousers
- Shorts or zip off-trousers for warmer days
- A cap or hat to protect from the sun
- A beanie hat to keep ear warm
- Gloves
- Stable, closed-toe walking shoes or boots
- Sunglasses
- Suncream
- Insect repellent spray
- Binoculars (we recommend 10x42)
- A camera or decent smartphone
- Reusable water bottle
- Small / medium sized backpack
- Travel adaptor plugs
- Handheld torch
- Casual wear for downtime
The fully inclusive cost of the trip is $7000 AUD per person.
Weather is of course unpredictable. However, we have chosen to run this trip in the winter season in South Africa where the days are sunny and bright, rainfall is low, and nights are chilly. If it rains, that won't impact us much, we'll still be able to do what we have planned, we just need dress accordingly.
When we are on game drives in the Kruger NP there are rest stops, camps and restaurants that we will schedule regular stops at. If we are out on foot in a private reserve and you are caught short, you will need to use the surround bush!
Yes, unfortunately we cannot accept guests under the age of 17 years old and 17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Over 18s can accompany themselves.
We recommend fully immersing yourself in this 10-day trip and largely disconnecting from the online world. However, should you need connectivity, here is an overview of the connection across the Experience:
- There will be decent signal and WiFi in Nelspruit in our first accommodation
- Signal in Kruger National Park is patchy and disappears in places. There is WiFi at the restaurant in our camp though.
- At EcoTraining's camp, there is signal but no WiFi.
- At Care For Wild the signal is poor and there is no WiFi.
Couples will be together in private rooms and singles will be paired up appropriately to share twin rooms. In some cases, there is opportunity to pay for an upgrade to your own room. Otherwise, we are more than happy to discuss allocation with you individually if you have a specific preference.
Upon booking you must arrange international and domestic flights to arrive in Nelspruit (Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport) on the day that the trip begins. You have flexibility to arrive at whatever time suits you on the 6th, but ideally not late into the evening. We will collect you from the airport and take you to our accommodation for the first night before heading off into the Kruger early in the morning of the 7th. On the 15th, we recommend booking domestic flights from Nelspruit (KMI) after 12PM with international flights out of South Africa booked for the evening.
We will provide guidance closer to the time and please consult with us before booking non-refundable flights.
We strongly recommend taking up travel insurance to cover you from unforeseen circumstances that may affect your trip.
